I came across a really interesting study printed in the Archives of Dermatology in July 2008 discussing the research findings on a study performed looking at the motivation for contemporary tattoo removal. The 2006 study included 196 tattooed people (66 men and 130 women). The incidence of tattoos among adults aged 18 to 30 is approximately 25%. Here were the primary removal motivations:
- Just decided to remove it (got tired of it)
- Suffered embarrassment
- Lowered body image
- New job/career
- Problems with clothes
- An occassion (birthday, marriage, award, etc.)
More than 40% of the people who had chosen the tattoo to help them feel unique or to seek uniqueness were disillusioned because the unique product had lost its excitement and luster.
I was impressed with the quality of this research literature because it helped distinguish between what it calls purchase and possession risks. Purchase risks are primarily those surrounding the quality of the tattoo, tattoo artist, placement, etc.. Posession risk is the disparity between the purpose of the tattoo and people’s response to it. There are a number of reasons that people choose tattoo removal or choose to have a tattoo faded. This research helped shed some light on the underlying motivations.
